Tana Beles Integrated Sugar Factory inaugurated
The $ 231 million Tana Beles Integrated Sugar Factory was inaugurated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by federal, state and zonal officials as well as members of the local community.
It is said that the construction of Tana Beles Sugar Factory started in 2003 EC and has been delayed 8 years for various reasons.
The factory was completed in 14 months after it was handed over to the Chinese company CMCE in 2010 EC.
Attending the inauguration ceremony, Agenyew Teshager said the construction of the Tana Beles Sugar Factory was not completed on time due to problems before the change.
As a result, the project, which has been delayed for more than eight years, was not expected by the people and management of the region to be completed, he said.
He said the government had terminated the contract with the former Steel and Engineering Corporation, which had been a contractor for the country’s transformation process, and had been able to produce it in less than two years.
He said the factory will also produce molasis, ethanol, alcohol, sanitizer and other sugar products.
The CEO of the Sugar Corporation, Woyo Roba, on his part said the eight-year project was completed following the government’s decision. He said the project budget was fully funded to the former contractor with only 60 percent of the project was done.
