Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, arresting 62 protesters by truck.
Roads connecting the cities were closed by protesters, and police and civilians were reportedly injured.
Al Jazeera quoted local police as saying that some people may have been beaten in the ensuing riots.
Jacob Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison on charges of corruption during his tenure.
It has been days since the president finally surrendered to the police.
