Ethiopia: Cement factories to stop production citing lack of resources

Cement factories are shutting down production due to shortage of coal and various inputs, according to the Cement Manufacturers Association. According to the association, the Ministry of Mines has not been able to solve the problem.

The Ministry of Mines, on its part, says that it earlier sent a letter to the association and to the cement factories asking for details on which resources they were in short supply. However, the ministry said it couldn’t solve the problem because there hasn’t been any response for its request yet.

East Cement, Ethio Cement, Habesha Cement are indicated among the victims; whereas it is also indicated that if the problem is not addressed, inevitably the country’s cement production will continue to decline.
A management member of the Cement Manufacturers Association, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the EPA that cement factories shut down production due to lack of resources and different problems, while some of them are producing at half capacity.
