Ethiopia: The Ministry of Culture and Sports announces that preparations are underway to use languages proposed under the Ethiopian Language Development Policy as the federal working language
Stakeholders held discussion yesterday in Adama on the document prepared by the Ethiopian Language Policy for the implementation of the languages set out to become the federal working language in addition to Amharic.
Minister of Culture and Sports, Kejela Merdassa said various studies have been conducted to develop necessary regulations, including translation and interpretation, for the implementation of policy-recognized languages. He further said that various necessary steps were being carried out to complete the preparations.
State Minister for Culture and Language, Worknesh Birru, on her part said that they working to implement the four languages set by the Ethiopian Language Development Policy in addition to Amharic as a federal language. She said the translation of the policy into Oromo, Somali and Afar languages has been completed. Stating that the Tigrigna language policy was yet to be addressed, the state minister said they were looking for a solution for it.
