“Work is underway to repatriate detainees in Saudi Arabia as soon as possible” – Ambassador Lencho Bati
The Ethiopian Embassy in Saudi Arabia announced that it is working closely with the Saudi government to repatriate Ethiopian detainees in a short period of time.
Ethiopia’s Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Lencho Bati said the Ethiopian government is working closely with the Saudi government to repatriate Ethiopians who have been detained and abused in Saudi Arabia for various reasons.
He also said that a committee headed by the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs has been set up to work with the regions to ensure that they do not get into trouble after returning from Saudi Arabia.
He said the committee, which includes staff from the Ethiopian embassy in Saudi Arabia, is working closely with the Saudi government on the issue.
He said Ethiopians have been traveling to Saudi Arabia for religious, educational and employment purposes since the beginning of the year. He said they are entering the country illegally.
The Ambassaddor said “The new Saudi government, led by King Salman bin Abdulaziz, has come up with a new vision to modernize the country and cover a wide range of sectors by Saudi citizens and because of the restrictions most of illegally intered individuals detained by government of Saudi Arabia” .
He recalled that although the government of Ethiopia is in the war in northern Ethiopia which caused social and economic damage, the Ethiopian government had returned about 42,000 people by talking with with the Saudi government.
He further added that the Saudi government is committed to upholding the rights of detainees and providing them with the necessary support during their detention until their citizens return home. According to Ambassador Lencho, those who have registered to travel to Saudi Arabia legally should not afraid for the crisis since it is only concerned with the illegally arrived ones.
