Legal protection against arrest and prosecution of Dr. Muluken Haftu removed by the council
Dr Muluken Haftu, a member of the Finfinnee City Council and the head of the city’s Innovation and Technology Bureau, has been stripped of his legal immunity.
The council stripped its member of the immunity from prosecution at the request of the Ministry of Justice. The Justice Ministry has requested the removal of Dr Muluken’s legal cover in connection with the recent condominium lottery process in connection with the arrest of suspected corrupt officials. Muluken Haftu was made to resign two days ago. All Houses of People’s Representatives and regional councils have legal protection against arrest and prosecution unless their members are arrested for crimes.
Chapter 4 of the Finfinne Municipality Charter Law declares that no member of the council can be arrested and prosecuted without the permission of the council unless he is caught committing a crime. However, the council shall have the right to lift the right of a councilor to lift his immunity when he is suspected of a crime.
The speaker of the city council, Ms. Buzena Abuqarir, presented the letter submitted by the Ministry of Justice to the council. The Speaker told the House that Dr Muluken should be arrested on suspicion of corruption and deprived of his legal cover for investigation.
