Customs Police Intercept Contraband Goods worth 110mln Birr

Contraband goods worth over 110 million Birr have been seized at customs branches across Ethiopia, officials said on Saturday.

Ethiopian Customs Commission (ECC) said the contraband items were seized in a seven-day operation against the illegal movement of goods to evade customs duties, starting August 5.

The majority of the items were seized during attempts to smuggle them into Ethiopia, the Commission said, estimating their value at 90.8 million Birr. The rest of the items – worth 19.6 million birr – were intercepted from leaving the country.

In total, 110.4 million birr worth of contraband goods have been seized in the seven-day operation, said ECC, a government institution responsible for importing and exporting goods.

Clothes, Electronics, livestock, petrol, Coffee, Medicine, narcotic drugs, vehicles, edible oil, weapons, khat, and foreign currencies were among the goods seized

Customs branches at Hawassa, Jigjiga, and Awash were able to capture the majority of the illegal goods.

The three, respectively, prevented contraband trades worth 18.4mln birr, 15.4mln birr, and 13.2mln birr, Customs officials said.

The collaborative effort among customs officers, regional and federal police departments with the support of the public has played a key role in the fight against illegal trade, according to ECC.
