Ethiopian Airlines to Start Regular Cargo Flights to Dire Dawa, Jigjiga

Ethiopian Cargo and Logistics Services is set to add local flights to its destinations with the launch of a regular flight to Dire Dawa and Jigjiga cities.

The thrice-weekly cargo flights from its main hub in Addis Ababa to east Ethiopian cities will start as of August 30, announced the airlines on Tuesday.

The announcement comes after the government launched Ethiopia’s first Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in the Dire Dawa city administration on Sunday, August 14, 2022.

Last month, Transport and Logistics Minister Dagmawit Moges, met with Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew to discuss the role that the airlines can play to make the free trade zone’s operation effective.

The government plans to leverage the immense experiences the Airlines have in cargo operation and logistics business in making the FTZ’s operation effective, Minister said at the meeting.

Ethiopian Airlines is the leading Cargo and Logistics Services operator in Africa and covers about 130 international destinations around the world with both belly hold capacity and dedicated freighter services.

The airline is also stepping up its effort to further expand its freighter fleet following an increasing demand for cargo services.

The national flag carrier recently signed aircraft purchase agreements with Boeing, Airbus, and De Havilland to acquire more cargo planes. These include orders to purchase five 777 Boeing freighters, and two De Havilland’s Dash 8-400 cargo aircraft.
