The USAID has been providing support to the BDU, including funding the university’s Institute of Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Studies, for the last two decades.

On Tuesday, USAID Ethiopia Mission Director Sean Jones signed the agreement to launch the $7.7 million project with the BDU vice-president Dr. Tesfaye Shiferaw, during his trip to the city of Bahir Dar.

The U.S. embassy in Addis Ababa said the latest investment would support the university “to train the mext generation of 750 Ethiopian disaster risk management professionals.”

The latest investment is the largest single external investment in the 60-year-long history of the University, the embassy added.

Including the USAID, Bahir Dar University currently collaborates with 190 partners on various projects.

During his visit to Bahir Dar Tuesday, Mission Director Jones also met with Amhara Regional Health Bureau head, Dr. Melkamu Abte, to hand over 8 motor vehicles in support of its life-saving activities in the region.

The US aid agency gave vehicles, valued at $400,000, as per the request made by the bureau.

“These vehicles will be used to deliver essential medicines and medical equipment to health facilities and to transport doctors and medical staff to the hardest-to-reach areas in Amhara Region.,” the embassy said.

The latest support has taken the amount of humanitarian and development aid the USAID provided in the last two years to the Amhara region to $430 million, according to the US Embassy.
