Council of Ministers Approves Contract Farming, Seed Draft Laws

The council of ministers has passed two bills, contract farming, and plant seed draft proclamations, in its regular session on Friday
The meeting chaired by Prime minister Abiy Ahmed first dealt with a draft proclamation for contract farming.
The bill is expected to create a legal framework that governs the relationship between producers and buyers of agricultural products.
Having the proclamation will pave a way for effective market link and speed up agricultural production and productivity in the country, said the PM Office.
During the same meeting, PM Abiy Cabinet also deliberated on a bill that amended the Seed proclamation number 784/2013.
The amendment has become necessary to modernize the country’s seed sector and enhance the participation of the private sector by attracting technology and investment, according to the PM Office.
It also said the amendments bill would bridge the gaps that the current proclamation has, and enable the production and supply of a variety of quality seeds in a sustainable manner.
The council unanimously voted to pass both draft proclamations and sent them to the lower house of the Ethiopian parliament for ratification.
