Ethiopia’s capital gets 110 public buses – New Business Ethiopia
Today, the Addis Ababa City Administration announced the addition 110 public buses to its state-owned Anbessa City Bus.
It was revealed that $16.5 million has been invested by the City Administration to purchase the buses during the Meskel Square ceremony. The ceremony is held inline with the today’s (Pagume 4, 2014), which is the 4th day of the 13th month of year 2014 Ethiopian Calendar, that is being celebrated as ‘Service Day’ across Ethiopia.
According to Adanech Abiebie, Mayor of Addis Ababa City (Addis Ababa City Administration), 250 new buses will be brought to the city in the next three months. Anbessa City Bus Enterprise currently carries over 600,000. It is relatively affordable and supported by a subsidy of the Addis Ababa City Administration.
The increased number of buses will likely alleviate the severe transport shortage in Addis Ababa (the capital of Ethiopia). It has become a common sight to see people waiting in long lines for buses or taxis in Addis Ababa over the years.
The 13th Ethiopian month (Pagume) is made up of five days and six days, one every four years. Today’s date (Pagume 4) is named as ‘service day’ by the Government of Ethiopia, which also associated each of the five days of Pagume with different activities.
