IGAD calls the agreements between #Ethiopia, #Somalia very important

Spokesperson of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Nuur Mohamud Sheekh in his remarks on the 30th of September 2022 stated that, “IGAD has welcomed the agreement reached by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. Adding that, “A very important commitment by the leaders of Ethiopia and Somalia strengthen regional cooperation.”

In a joint communique released on the 30th of September 2022 at the end of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s first Official visit to Ethiopia, both Ethiopia and Somalia have agreed to work to nurture and strengthen the longstanding bilateral ties and relationships between the two countries and peoples based on respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of both countries, to effectively collaborate in the fight against their common enemy; terrorism and extremism.

The two sides have also agreed to emphasize on the need to work together to minimize the effects of undue external interferences that could potentially undermine their joint effort for peace and stability in the region and effectively combat terrorism.

The two leaders called upon the UNSC to consider the request of the Federal State of Somalia for the lifting of the arms embargo imposed on the country.

Finally, both countries have also stressed the importance of expanding cooperation in the areas of trade, economy and infrastructure as well as communications in addition to the well-established political and security collaborations among others.
