Grade 12 National Exam Underways

The grade 12 national exam for the 2014 academic year has begun across yeterday.

Over 976, 000 students are expected to sit for the annual secondary school leaving exam in two rounds.

The majority of them, 560, 800 students in social science stream, have begun taking the exam the firat phase that started on Monday.

The exam which will run for until Wednesday is being administered in public universities.

Authorities decided to administer the exam in universities in a bid to ensure transparency and integrity.

โ€˜Peaceful first dayโ€™

The exam took place on Monday morning in 130 centers set up in the universities.

In the afternoon, Education Minister Birhanu Nega told reporters that the first day has concluded without any security or other problems.

In Hawassa Univeristy however, the exam started off with an accident that left nearly 10 Students injured after a bridge linking the main campus with the Institute of Technology collapsed.

The Minister expressed his sympathy for the injured students taken to Hawassa Referral hospital for treatment. Reports put their number at 7.

Hawassa University officials said those students were unable to sit for the exam due to the accident will be given another chance.

The ongoing exam for the social science students will conclude on Wednesday. It will be follwed by the second round exam for students in natural science stream schedualed for next week.
