US calls on Israel and Palestinians to de-escalate

After the Israeli air force targeted the killing of three senior Palestinian militant leaders in the Gaza Strip, the US has called on both sides to de-escalate.

A spokesman for the National Security Council at the White House in Washington also emphasized that Israel has the right to defend itself and to protect its citizens from terrorist attacks. Israel justified the airstrikes last night with sustained rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. According to Palestinian sources, ten civilians were also killed. Militant Palestinians threatened retaliation. Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a – quote – “devastating reaction” in this case. As the Haaretz newspaper reports, the United Arab Emirates, France and China have requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council for today.This message was broadcast on Deutschlandfunk on May 9th, 2023.
