How to Write an Effective Cover Letter and CV/Resume for Scholarship Applications

If you want to apply for a scholarship, you must effectively prepare an attractive cover letter and CV. Here are some tips for writing effective cover letters and CVs for scholarship applications.

A scholarship application letter is a document that accompanies your scholarship application. This is your opportunity to introduce yourself, explain why you are applying for the scholarship and how it will help you achieve your academic and career goals. It should be concise, well-written, and relevant to the scholarship you are applying for. Search for scholarship providers:

Before writing your cover letter, research the scholarship provider and understand their values, mission, and goals. This will help you tailor your letter to their expectations and demonstrate how you align with their values.

Structure your cover letter: Your cover letter should be structured into three parts:

Introduction, body and conclusion. In the introduction, introduce yourself and explain why you are applying for the scholarship. In the body, highlight your academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and any other relevant experience that demonstrates your suitability for the scholarship. Finally, reiterate your interest in the scholarship and thank the reader for considering your application.

Be concise and precise: Your cover letter should not exceed one page. Use simple language and avoid jargon or technical terms that may be unfamiliar to readers. Be specific about your achievements and experience and provide examples to support your statement.

Reread your cover letter: Before submitting your application, proofread your cover letter to make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. You can also ask a friend or mentor to review it for you.

The other one is preparing the CV/resume. Before you start writing your CV, you need to reassess yourself and determine what elements of your professional, academic and personal experience you will put down on paper. First, you need to gather as much information as possible to get a broader picture of what you offer, and then you need to choose what information to display and how to do so. Remember that the scholarship provider has the final say, so research them and the profile they are looking for. Based on this, select and highlight the most relevant skills and experience in your Curriculum Vitae (CV). You can start your search by carefully reading the scholarship description and its requirements. You can also view the profiles of other scholarship recipients studying through this scholarship. What often happens is that fellows publish articles or videos about the organization in which other researchers share their experiences, and this is your opportunity to analyze their profile. Arrange your academic CV to receive a scholarship: Every CV should have three parts:

Contact details, training and professional experience. However, I recommend adding other sections to make it easier for readers to identify relevant characteristics such as certifications and accreditations, volunteering and other experience, software skills, and languages. Use a simple format:

Your CV should be one to two pages long. You should use neutral, professional fonts. Bold and italics are used only for headings or to highlight key terms. Describe recent information and avoid using verbiage. Be honest and positive.

Be specific with the information you submit: Your academic CV for scholarship should be short and specific. It is recommended to use Times New Roman font and bullets, bold, and capital letters to show relevant information to the reader. The information must be in chronological order. Check spelling: Make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors in your CV.
