The EFP Introduces Advanced Drones for Enhanced Security and Crime Prevention
H.E, Demelash G/Michael the Commissioner General of the Ethiopian Federal Police, has announced the introduction of advanced drone technology aimed at bolstering efforts to combat smuggling, illegal human trafficking, and enhance border security. In a statement during the inauguration of a police drone force pilot training center, he highlighted that these drones will also play a crucial role in improving city security across Ethiopia.
“These newly introduced drones will provide us with an opportunity to easily control smuggling, illegal human trafficking, and secure of our borders,” said H.E, Demelash G/Michael Commissioner General of the Ethiopian Federal Police. He emphasized the importance of this technology in modernizing the Ethiopian Federal Police and its ability to effectively combat crime, both within the country and across its borders.
H.E the Commissioner General further noted that the Police drone pilot training center, established to equip young police officers with the skills and knowledge to handle cutting-edge technologies. The training program, which concluded with a graduation ceremony at its headquarters, will enable officers to use drones in a variety of security roles, including surveillance and crime prevention.
For the first time in Ethiopia’s history, the Federal Police is equipped with such advanced technology. H.E the Commissioner General Demelash expressed confidence that this initiative would contribute to the broader goal of transforming the Ethiopian Federal Police into one of the top five police institutions in Africa by 2030, while also sharing expertise with neighboring African countries.
This technological advancement is part of the ongoing police reforms, which have focused on enhancing the capacity of the police force with modern equipment, weapons, and operational methods that respect human rights. H.E the Commissioner General Demelash noted that, in collaboration with ground forces, drones will patrol big cities like Addis Ababa, streamlining crime prevention activity and improving overall security measures.
The Ethiopian Federal Police has also inaugurated a modern roadblock vehicle equipped with its own command and control system, designed to manage traffic during major events such as the African Union Summit. This vehicle can block roads for a certain period and is capable of accommodating VIPs, further demonstrating its commitment to improving security infrastructure.
