#Ethiopia: #GERD generates 6,800 GWh in nine months, enters final phase

The Ministry of Water and Energy said the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) generated 6,800 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electric power over the past nine months, with five turbines currently in operation.
Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa told state media that the dam has “reached its final phase” and is now capable of “holding a large volume of water.” He said the five operational turbines are each generating 400 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
According to the Minister, additional turbines under construction will further increase the total output once completed. GERD is expected to host 11 turbines when fully operational.
During the same period last year, Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) reported that the dam had produced more than 2,700 GWh of electricity using two turbines, each with a capacity of approximately 375 MW.
