Ethiopia: PM Abiy confirms GERD inauguration in September, invites Egypt, Sudan, and all Nile Basin countries to attend

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed confirmed today that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will be inaugurated in September following the end of the current rainy season, and extended a formal invitation to Egypt, Sudan, and all Nile Basin countries to attend the ceremony.

Speaking during a question-and-answer session with members of parliament, the Prime Minister said, “Because Parliament is the highest organ, I am extending an invitation in front of this Parliament for Egypt, Sudan, and all Nile Basin countries to join in the inauguration.”

Reaffirming Ethiopia’s position, Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that the GERD will not cause harm to downstream nations. “The Aswan Dam has not lost a single liter of water,” he said, adding that Ethiopia has “no desire for either Egypt or Sudan to be harmed.”
