Zegeye Asfaw, Advocate for Land Reform and Former Minister, Dies
Zegeye Asfaw, a noted figure in Ethiopian politics and a current commissioner of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, has passed away.
As one of the eleven commissioners, Zegeye had served on the body since its inception, working to facilitate inclusive national dialogue and build consensus among Ethiopians on critical political and national issues. He was widely respected for his incisive views on governance, nation-building, and forging national unity.
Beyond his recent role, Zegeye left a lasting mark on Ethiopia’s political history, particularly during the transitional period following the fall of the imperial regime. As Minister of Agriculture under the Derg government, he was instrumental in implementing the historic “Land to the Tiller” land reform proclamation.
A lawyer by training, Zegeye earned his degrees from Addis Ababa University and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He devoted decades to public service, holding ministerial positions across multiple government portfolios, including the Ministry of Land Reform and Administration, the Ministry of Agriculture and Settlement, the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.
