Ethiopia to Send Delegation to South Africa Following Xenophobic Attacks, Foreign Ministry Confirms

Ethiopia has announced plans to dispatch a high‑level delegation to South Africa in response to recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Ethiopian citizens, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed on Thursday.
Ministry spokesperson Nebiat Getachew said the Ethiopian government is taking additional measures beyond the ongoing efforts of its embassy in Pretoria. As part of the diplomatic response, Addis Ababa has also summoned South Africa’s ambassador for consultations.
According to the spokesperson, Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos held talks with his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola. During the discussion, South African officials reportedly assured that investigations into the attacks are underway and promised legal action against those responsible.
The Ministry further stated that the planned delegation will work to strengthen coordinated and reliable protection for Ethiopian nationals in South Africa.
In a related development, Foreign Minister Gedion also conferred with Waleed El Khereiji, Deputy Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, to address the safety and welfare of Ethiopian citizens residing in the Kingdom.
