African Union Election Observers Begin Preparations for Ethiopia’s 7th General Elections

The African Union Election Observation Mission has begun preparations to monitor Ethiopia’s upcoming general elections in the capital, Addis Ababa.

May 29, 2026, Ethio Affairs – The mission is led by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who arrived in Ethiopia heading a high-level delegation following an official invitation from the Ethiopian government.
The delegation comprises 73 observers from 37 African countries, including election officials, human rights and social affairs experts, as well as representatives from civil society organizations, the media, and youth groups. Women make up 61 percent of the mission members.
During the two-day orientation and preparation program, observers are receiving briefings on the political and security situation, the code of conduct for election observers, the legal and constitutional framework governing the elections, and findings from pre-election assessments.
Observers are expected to be deployed across different parts of the country to monitor voting procedures, vote counting, and the announcement of results. The mission will also hold meetings with the National Election Board of Ethiopia, political parties, civil society organizations, and members of the diplomatic community.
