Egyptian Water Expert: Ethiopia Will Be One of Africa’s Strongest Economies Within 10 Years
An Egyptian expert on dams and water resources, Dr. Muhammed Hafiz, says Ethiopia has what it takes to become one of Africa’s strongest economies in the coming decade.
He points to Ethiopia’s fast-growing infrastructure, energy projects, and farming improvements as the main reasons.
Hafiz said Ethiopia has made strong economic progress since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office in 2018. He described the country’s large projects as smart investments that will help future generations.
In a recent TV interview with Egypt’s El Sharq TV, Hafiz highlighted Ethiopia’s growing electricity production, better roads and airports, and success in growing wheat.
He noted that Ethiopia now produces enough wheat for itself, even though its farms don’t yet produce as much per acre as Egypt’s. He said the country has made big progress in politics, the economy, and farming.
Hafiz also said Ethiopia has great potential to export more food to other countries, especially to Gulf nations.
He added that if Ethiopia gets direct access to a seaport, its economic growth could speed up even more. That, he said, could help Ethiopia grow as fast as major industrial countries did in their early stages.
On the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Hafiz dismissed safety concerns. He said satellite images show the dam’s turbines are still working normally and water flow is stable. He also rejected recent reports claiming the turbines had stopped, calling those reports false.
