U.S. Commends Ethiopia’s Contribution to Regional Peace and Security
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – July 27, 2026 — The United States has praised Ethiopia for its continued efforts to promote peace and stability across the Horn of Africa while reaffirming its commitment to strengthening defense cooperation with the country.
The remarks came during a meeting held on Monday at the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) Headquarters in Addis Ababa between ENDF Chief of General Staff Field Marshal Berhanu Jula and General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, Commander of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).
During the discussions, the two military leaders reviewed the long-standing defense partnership between Ethiopia and the United States, exchanged views on regional security developments, and explored opportunities to deepen future military collaboration.
General Anderson emphasized that defense relations between the two nations continue to expand across multiple areas, reflecting a strong and enduring partnership built on shared interests and mutual commitment. He noted that both sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation in counterterrorism efforts, particularly in addressing threats posed by Al-Shabaab and ISIS in Somalia, while identifying additional areas for joint engagement.
The AFRICOM Commander commended Ethiopia for its significant role in advancing regional peace and security, highlighting the successful joint organization of the 2026 African Communications and Logistics Symposium (ALCS) as a clear example of the growing defense cooperation between the two countries.
According to General Anderson, the Ethiopia–U.S. defense partnership goes beyond military operations, focusing on developing modern and sustainable defense capabilities while working together to address Africa’s evolving security challenges.
He also underscored the importance of the symposium as a platform for African defense institutions to exchange knowledge, showcase emerging technologies, strengthen partnerships with the private sector, and enhance institutional capacity across the continent.
General Anderson further praised Ethiopia’s leadership in bringing African nations together to address common security concerns through collaborative dialogue and cooperation.
Speaking after the meeting, Major General Teshome Gemechu, Director General of Foreign Relations and Military Cooperation at the ENDF, described the discussions as productive and expressed confidence that they would further reinforce the longstanding friendship and strategic defense partnership between Ethiopia and the United States.
The meeting was also attended by U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin J. Massinga and senior military officials from both Ethiopia and the United States.
