Ethiopia Launches 25-Year Power Distribution Master Plan to Modernize Electricity Network
Addis Ababa, July 27, 2026 — The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) has introduced a 25-year National Power Distribution Expansion and Modernization Master Plan aimed at transforming the country’s electricity distribution system through 2049.
The long-term strategy focuses on expanding power infrastructure, improving grid reliability, and accelerating the modernization and digitalization of Ethiopia’s electricity distribution network to support the country’s growing energy needs.
Speaking during the launch, EEU Chief Executive Officer Getu Geremu described the master plan as a major milestone for Ethiopia’s power sector. He noted that strengthening the distribution network is essential to sustaining economic growth, supporting industrial development, and improving access to reliable electricity across the country.
According to the utility, Ethiopia’s peak electricity demand is projected to reach 39,327 megawatts by 2049, driven by rapid population growth, urbanization, industrial expansion, and the increasing adoption of electric vehicles.
To accommodate this rising demand, the master plan includes the construction of 128 new power substations over the next 25 years, significantly expanding the national distribution network.
The initiative is expected to play a key role in enhancing energy access, increasing the efficiency of electricity delivery, and supporting Ethiopia’s long-term development ambitions by creating a more resilient and modern power distribution system.
