Ethiopia Opens Two Robotic Surgery Training Centres with China’s Support
Ethiopia has taken a major step toward advancing medical technology and improving surgical expertise with the establishment of two specialised training centres focused on robotic surgery and advanced minimally invasive medical procedures. The initiative is being supported through cooperation between Ethiopia and China as part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare capacity in the country.
The new facilities, inaugurated in Addis Ababa, include the China-Africa Robotic Surgery Training Center and the China-Africa Endoscopic Technology Training Center. The centres aim to provide healthcare professionals with access to modern surgical techniques, specialised training, and opportunities to exchange knowledge with Chinese medical experts.
The launch is part of the China-Africa Partnership Program for Minimally Invasive Medicine, which seeks to expand cooperation in areas such as robotic-assisted surgery, endoscopic procedures, and other advanced medical technologies. The programme was jointly organised by China’s Central South University’s Xiangya Hospital, Addis Ababa Silk Road General Hospital, and the China-Africa Hospital Alliance.
Ethiopian officials and medical professionals welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to improve the country’s healthcare system by enhancing the skills of local surgeons and introducing advanced treatment methods.
The partnership reflects the growing medical and technological cooperation between Ethiopia and China. Chinese experts have supported Ethiopia’s healthcare sector through various initiatives, including medical exchanges, training programmes, and capacity-building projects aimed at improving healthcare delivery.
The introduction of robotic surgery training is expected to help Ethiopian doctors gain experience with cutting-edge medical technologies, potentially improving patient outcomes and reducing the need for patients to seek specialised treatment abroad.
As Ethiopia continues to modernise its healthcare infrastructure, the new centres represent a significant milestone in building local expertise in advanced surgery and strengthening collaboration between African and Chinese medical institutions.
