Rare Total Solar Eclipse Set to Dazzle Europe: Best Viewing Locations and Safety Tips
Millions of skywatchers across Europe are preparing for a rare total solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, as the Moon moves directly between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking sunlight from reaching parts of the planet.
The eclipse will be visible in different forms depending on location. A narrow path across northern and central Spain, a small part of Portugal, Greenland and Iceland will experience totality, when the Moon completely covers the Sun. Much of western Europe—including the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Switzerland and northern Italy—will witness a deep partial solar eclipse, with the Moon covering most, but not all, of the Sun.
What Is a Solar Eclipse?
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and casts its shadow onto Earth’s surface. A total solar eclipse occurs when an observer is positioned within the Moon’s darkest shadow, known as the umbra, allowing the Moon to completely cover the Sun’s bright disk.
People outside the path of totality may see a partial eclipse, during which only a portion of the Sun is obscured. Whether an observer sees a total, partial or no eclipse depends largely on their location because the Moon’s shadow falls across only a relatively narrow area of Earth’s surface.
Spain Among the Best Places to Watch
Northern and central Spain are expected to offer some of the best viewing conditions for the total eclipse. The totality path stretches across Spain, while parts of Portugal, Greenland and Iceland will also experience the Moon completely covering the Sun.
In Spain, the eclipse is expected to reach its maximum between approximately 8:26 p.m. and 8:33 p.m. local time, shortly before sunset. Because the Sun will be relatively low in the sky, observers are advised to find locations with an unobstructed view toward the western horizon.
The event is particularly significant because it is the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe in more than 20 years. The last total eclipse visible from the UK occurred in 1999, while another total eclipse will not be visible from the UK until 2090.
Deep Partial Eclipse Across the UK
Although the UK is outside the path of totality, observers will experience a particularly deep partial eclipse.
In London, the eclipse is expected to begin at approximately 6:17 p.m. BST, reach its maximum around 7:13 p.m., and finish at about 8:06 p.m. Around 92% of the Sun is expected to be covered in London. Cornwall could see approximately 96% coverage, while western Scotland could experience around 93%.
How to Watch the Eclipse Safely
Experts strongly warn against looking directly at the Sun during a solar eclipse without appropriate protection. Ordinary sunglasses do not provide sufficient protection, and staring at the Sun can cause severe and potentially permanent damage to the eyes.
The safest options include:
- Use certified solar-eclipse glasses specifically designed for viewing the Sun.
- Never substitute ordinary sunglasses for eclipse glasses.
- Do not look directly through cameras, binoculars or telescopes unless the equipment has an appropriate solar filter specifically designed for that purpose.
- If eclipse glasses are unavailable, use an indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector. A small hole can project an image of the eclipsed Sun onto paper or card without requiring you to look at the Sun.
- Choose a viewing location with a clear western horizon, particularly because the Sun will be low in the sky in many European locations.
Safety is especially important because previous eclipses have resulted in eye injuries when people attempted to observe the Sun without adequate protection.
Why Scientists Are Interested
The eclipse is not only a spectacular event for the public; it also provides scientists with an opportunity to study the solar corona, the Sun’s outer atmosphere. During totality, the normally overwhelming brightness of the Sun’s surface is blocked, allowing researchers to observe aspects of the corona and investigate changes associated with the Sun’s roughly 11-year cycle of solar activity.
Solar eclipses have also played an important role in the history of science. Observations during the 1919 eclipse helped scientists test predictions associated with Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity.
A Special Night for Skywatchers
The August 12 eclipse is part of an especially interesting period for astronomy enthusiasts. A partial lunar eclipse is expected to be visible in the UK on August 28, while the annual Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak around the night of August 12–13.
For millions of observers, the solar eclipse will provide a rare opportunity to witness the Moon temporarily transform daylight into an extraordinary celestial spectacle. But regardless of whether the eclipse is total or partial, experts emphasize that eye protection should always be the first priority.
