Mackenzie Dern Retains UFC Strawweight Title After Dominant Victory Over Gillian Robertson

Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her UFC women’s strawweight championship for the first time, defeating Gillian Robertson by unanimous decision at UFC 330 in Philadelphia.

Dern controlled much of the five-round co-main event with her superior grappling and ground game. The champion repeatedly took Robertson down, passed her guard and threatened with submissions throughout the contest. The judges ultimately awarded Dern the fight with scores of 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47.

Dern came close to finishing the fight in the opening round after taking Robertson’s back and aggressively pursuing a rear-naked choke. Robertson survived the submission attempt and continued fighting, but Dern maintained control for much of the bout.

The champion’s wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu proved particularly effective. She successfully completed four of six takedown attempts and accumulated more than 10 minutes of control time. Robertson, a highly experienced UFC fighter and one of the organization’s leading female submission specialists, struggled to impose her own grappling game against Dern.

Dern acknowledged after the fight that she had hoped to secure a submission but said fatigue affected her performance late in the contest. Robertson was able to make the fifth round more competitive after Dern began to tire, but it was not enough to overturn the champion’s advantage from the first four rounds.

The victory extended Dern’s winning streak to four fights. Her recent run includes her title victory over Virna Jandiroba and now her successful first defense against Robertson. Her previous defeat came against Amanda Lemos at UFC 298 in February 2024.

Zhang Weili Could Be Next

With her first title defense complete, Dern appears eager for a potential showdown with former strawweight champion Zhang Weili. Zhang vacated the 115-pound championship in 2025 after moving up to the flyweight division in pursuit of a second UFC title.

Zhang ultimately lost her flyweight title challenge against Valentina Shevchenko in November and has yet to announce her next move. Dern has previously expressed interest in facing Zhang, and Saturday’s performance strengthened her case for a major matchup against the former champion.

Dern’s dominant performance at UFC 330 therefore not only preserved her championship reign but also positioned her for another high-profile challenge as she seeks to establish herself as the leading fighter in the women’s strawweight division.
