Ethiopia and US Elevate Defense Ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
Addis Ababa. — August 22, 2026: Ethiopia and the United States have agreed to elevate their defense and security cooperation to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking a significant step in the relationship between the two countries.
The agreement was reached during high-level bilateral consultations held at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., following a visit by a senior Ethiopian delegation from August 19–20.
The discussions focused on strengthening military-to-military relations and expanding cooperation on shared defense and security priorities. The move is expected to provide a broader framework for closer coordination between the two countries on regional and international security challenges.
The development comes as Ethiopia and the United States seek to deepen their longstanding security engagement and strengthen cooperation on issues affecting the Horn of Africa.
The agreement represents a new chapter in Ethiopia–US defense relations and could pave the way for expanded strategic, institutional and operational cooperation in the years ahead.
