National Dialogue Forum Was Free From External Interference, Says Participant
Addis Ababa — August 17, The Ethiopian National Dialogue provided participants with an opportunity to openly discuss longstanding challenges and contributed to strengthening the country’s democratic practices, according to Bedassa Fireja (PhD), instructor at Jimma University and one of the facilitators of the dialogue during his stay with OBN Afaan Oromoo.
Speaking about his experience, Dr Bedassa said the National Dialogue created an important platform for citizens to discuss issues that had affected the country for years. He said participants engaged in discussions free from pressure or interference by any party.
According to him, participants initially held different and sometimes conflicting views. However, through continued dialogue and mutual understanding, many gradually developed a stronger sense of shared national identity and common interests.
Dr Bedassa Fereje said the dialogue also influenced his own perspectives, noting that the discussions encouraged participants to move beyond differences and strengthen their commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence among Ethiopia’s diverse communities.
He further clarified that the agreements reached during the dialogue are intended to serve as inputs for the government and other stakeholders rather than constitute final decisions or binding resolutions.
The National Dialogue process involved various groups of facilitators and experts. A total of 160 facilitators, 158 rapporteurs, and 80 panel of experts took part in the dialogue process, according to the report.
Dr Bedassa Fereje emphasized that the experience demonstrated the potential of inclusive dialogue to promote mutual understanding, strengthen democratic practices, and help Ethiopians address longstanding differences through peaceful discussion.
