The project, which was official commenced on Sunday January 10 is expected to benefit 4,200 households near Werabe town, according to Seleshi Bekele (Eng.), Minister of Water, irrigation and Energy.
“The project will develop command area of 1,800ha at a cost of 1.2 Billion Birr. The dam will have 27m height & stores 8MCM. The area is ideal for production of high value crops, fruits and vegetables. Additional benefits include recreation for nearby Werabe town, fishery, biodiversity, tourism & employment during construction & cultivation. In the ceremony, thousands of farmers, elderly & youth attended. Irrigation development is viable way for Ethiopia’s transformation of agriculture,” the minister tweeted.
Senior government officials from federal and regional state including Muferiat Kamil, Minister of Peace, and members of parliament have attended the ceremony.
