Ethiopia caught Chinese involved in gold smuggling – New Business Ethiopia

According to the Ministry of Mines of Ethiopia, mainly Chinese nationals were involved in smuggling gold out of Ethiopia with the help of artisan miners.

Takele Uma (Minister of Mines), gave this information to media on Friday. He stated that the Ministry had conducted two weeks worth of operations to seize foreign nationals involved with gold smuggling from Ethiopia.

According to the Minister, the mining areas where foreign nationals collaborated to smuggle gold can be found in Oromia and Benishangul Gumz in South West Ethiopia. The Government of Ethiopia is currently investigating the captures of gold smugglers.

Reports show that artisan gold miners in Ethiopia have been contributing more a lot for the increase of the country’s export earnings from gold.

In recent years Ethiopia’s gold export earnings has been increasing and $546 million in revenue last year ended July 7, 2022. It was second in terms of producing huge amounts of forex for Ethiopia last year, after coffee which generated $1.43 trillion.

The Ministry’s latest crackdown on gold smugglers is expected to increase Ethiopia’s hard currency income from gold at the close of the current budget year.
