HOAX: This Telegram channel is imitating the US Embassy in Addis Ababa

The embassy has flagged the channel as fake.

This Telegram channel purporting to belong to the US Embassy in Addis Ababa and offering jobs is a HOAX.

One of the posts on the Telegram channel invitingly reads: “Do you want to go to work in America with your expenses covered this week? First, join our channel through this link @USEmbassyAddiaAbab. Then share this information with at least 35 of his friends. Every week there are many job opportunities, this week it’s your turn. #Good luck.”

However, the US embassy flagged the channel as fake in a post on 28 March 2023.

“Fake Telegram account alert! We would like to bring to your attention that a fake Telegram account has been created using a U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa handle and logo and has gained over 77K subscribers,” part of the post on the embassy’s verified Facebook page states.

The post adds: “This account is NOT affiliated with this nor any other U.S. Embassy, and any information shared through this account is not valid. Do not follow or engage with this fake account, as they may be using your personal details for fraudulent or malicious purposes.”

The publication clarified that this is the Telegram channel associated with the US embassy in Addis Ababa, adding it is used to promote programmes and events at the Satchmo American Center.

It further explains that all employment or funding opportunities are posted on the embassy’s official website, verified Facebook page, and Twitter account.

PesaCheck has examined the Telegram channel purporting to belong to the US embassy in Addis Ababa and offering jobs and found it to be a HOAX.
