Kenya’s police chief has resigned following sharp criticism of the police’s handling of anti-government protests which left dozens of people dead.
The presidency said Friday that Japhet Koome, inspector general of the police, would be the latest head to roll in the wake of the demonstrations. President William Ruto has “accepted the resignation,” the presidency said in a statement. Deputy Inspector-General Douglas Kanja has been appointed acting police chief with immediate effect, the presidency added. The move comes a day after President William Ruto sacked almost his entire cabinet, seeking to contain widespread public anger against his government following weeks of largely peaceful demonstrations over proposed tax hikes which at times descended into deadly mayhem.
