Nearly 10 million Rwandans are heading to the polls today to choose a president and members of parliament who will serve for the next five years.
Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame is seeking to extend his 24-year rule in an upcoming election, which analysts predict he will win by a landslide. Kagame has consistently dominated elections since becoming president in 2000, securing over 90% of the vote in each election, including a 99% victory in 2017. At 66, he faces only two authorized contenders, as other candidates were barred by the state-run electoral commission. Kagame has been a central figure in Rwandan politics since his rebel forces ended the 1994 genocide, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus.
