ENDF says diplomatic community briefed on potential response to “Tsimdo” initiative
According to a report from Addis Standard (source), the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) has informed the diplomatic community in Addis Ababa about possible retaliatory measures if Ethiopia’s sovereignty is threatened through a so-called “Tsimdo” initiative.
Major General Teshome Gemechu, Director of Foreign Relations and Military Cooperation at the Ministry of Defense, warned that any attempt to implement the initiative would face severe consequences from the Ethiopian state. He described “Tsimdo” as an “anti-sovereignty” scheme allegedly created by “Ethiopian elements who have surrendered their shoulders to Pharaoh’s yoke” together with other groups in the region.
The official said the government has made extensive efforts to brief diplomatic and attaché corps in the capital to ensure they understand Ethiopia’s position. He noted that military attachés are key information sources for ambassadors and foreign governments. “We wanted them to understand beforehand that if anyone attempts to implement this idea, the response from the Ethiopian government is something they have already been informed about,” he stated.
While Major General Teshome said the “Tsimdo” initiative itself is not currently seen as a direct threat to Ethiopia’s peace and security, he issued a stern warning: “If they make even an inch of movement to bring this idea to the ground, as a sovereign nation and as an institution entrusted with protecting Ethiopia’s sovereignty, we believe and are convinced they will melt like wax in a fire.”
The interview followed a video circulating online showing Ethiopian opposition figures alongside individuals identified as Sudanese and Eritrean participants at a meeting in Port Sudan, released by Hidmona TV, a channel linked to the Eritrean government. The developments come amid heightened Ethiopia‑Sudan tensions and a recent deterioration in relations between Addis Ababa and Asmara, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed acknowledging disagreements over atrocities during the Tigray war and accusing Eritrea of interfering in Ethiopia’s internal affairs.
