Bishoftu International Airport

Abusera Airport, officially known as the Bishoftu International Airport is a massive infrastructure project currently under construction in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Located in Abusera, approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Finfinne City and it is designed to become the largest airport on the African continent.

The mega-hub is being built to resolve the looming capacity constraints at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport and secure Ethiopian Airlines’ long-term growth strategy.

Bishoftu International Airport Strategic Advantages

 Massive Capacity: Phase 1 is slated to open in 2030 with an initial capacity of 60 million passengers annually. Upon full multi-stage completion, the hub is projected to accommodate up to 110 million passengers and handle 3.7 million tons of cargo per year.

 Finance: The $12.5 billion project will eventually cover nearly 40 square kilometers.

 Infrastructure Design: Capable of handling the largest commercial airliner, alongside aircraft parking stands for up to 270 planes.

 Operational Altitude: The Abusera site rests at roughly 1,920 meters above sea level. This lower altitude significantly improves aircraft takeoff performance, allowing planes to carry maximum fuel and cargo loads for non-stop, ultra-long-haul routes.

 Airport City and Regional Connectivity: The “Mega Airport City” will host extensive duty-free shopping areas, entertainment centers, commercial logistics facilities, aviation maintenance (MRO) centers, and an airside hotel with 350 rooms. To ensure smooth transit to the capital, the airport will be linked directly to Addis Ababa via a new 200 km/h high-speed rail line and a dedicated multi-lane expressway.
