Prosperity Party Secures Another Parliamentary Majority

Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has comfortably won a parliamentary majority in this month’s national elections, according to official results released Sunday by the country’s election board.
The victory was widely anticipated, as Abiy’s party faced a fragmented opposition with limited capacity to mount a serious challenge to the ruling party’s dominance.
Abiy Ahmed first came to power in 2018 following mass protests that forced the long-ruling EPRDF coalition from office.
He established the Prosperity Party the following year as a new political vehicle. The party’s electoral dominance is consistent with its performance in the previous parliamentary elections in 2021, when it won more than 90% of available seats.
