Getachew Reda Criticizes Tigray Leadership, Praise US Ambassador’s Mediation Efforts
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Getachew K. Reda, former Interim President of the Tigray Region and current Prime Minister’s Advisor on Horn of Africa Affairs, has publicly commended the US Ambassador to Ethiopia while delivering sharp criticism of the Tigray leadership’s approach to negotiations.
In a statement posted on social media, Getachew Reda thanked Ambassador Massinga for his “persistent efforts to nudge people into reason and peaceful engagement” and praised his outreach to a cross-section of Tigray’s political groups, civil society organizations, and community leaders.
However, Getachew Reda took aim at what he described as a “cabal” within the Tigray leadership, accusing them of engaging in “clueless brinkmanship” to extract concessions from both the federal government and the international community. He further alleged that these actions are being carried out “while holding the entire population hostage.”
The advisor specifically noted that Ambassador Massinga was not permitted to meet General Tadesse Werede in person, describing the refusal as “typical” of a leadership that “turns every diplomatic gesture into hostage negotiation.”
The comments come amid ongoing tensions in the region and international efforts to broker lasting peace following the two-year conflict that ended with the Pretoria Agreement in November 2022.
Efforts to reach representatives of the Tigray interim administration for comment were not immediately successful.
