Arsenal Agrees Club-Record £34m Deal for Christos Tzolis as Trossard Replacement

Arsenal have reached an agreement with Club Brugge to sign Greek winger Christos Tzolis for a fee of £34 million, which sets a new transfer record for the Belgian Pro League. The move comes as the Premier League champions finalize the departure of Leandro Trossard to Turkish side Besiktas for £17 million.

The 24-year-old Tzolis, who previously played for Norwich City, was a standout performer for Brugge last season, registering 17 goals and 23 assists in just 36 league appearances. Sky Sports News understands that once the player learned of Arsenal’s interest, he prioritized the move to the Emirates.

Why Tzolis Fits Arteta’s System

According to analysis from Sky Sports’ Sam Blitz, Tzolis is viewed as a direct like-for-like replacement for Trossard, with several key similarities:

  • Positional Versatility: Like Trossard, Tzolis is primarily a left winger but excels as a No. 10. Former Club Brugge assistant manager Hayk Milkon noted he is “always strongest the closer he is to the goal,” capable of starting wide and drifting inside to attack central spaces.
  • Injury Record: Tzolis boasts an impressive availability record, with his longest absence at Brugge being just two matches, mirroring Trossard’s historically reliable fitness levels at Arsenal.
  • Work Rate and Intensity: Milkon described the winger as a high-intensity player who consistently covers significant distance, including high-speed sprints, even during congested weeks with Champions League fixtures.
  • Temperament: Tzolis shares Trossard’s competitive edge, with a noted area for improvement being “emotional stability,” a trait that manager Mikel Arteta famously embraced in the Belgian.

Transfer Context and Upcoming Fixtures

Arsenal’s move for Tzolis is reported to be independent of their ongoing pursuit of Morgan Rogers. The new signing will join a squad that begins its Premier League title defense with a home match against Coventry on August 21, followed by fixtures against Aston Villa, Chelsea, Sunderland, and Brighton.

This signing marks Arsenal’s first major attacking reinforcement of the summer window as they aim to bolster their forward options following Trossard’s exit.
