China dismisses ‘groundless’ Trump election interference claim
China denied President Trump’s accusation that it interfered with the 2020 presidential election, calling the claim “entirely fabricated” and “groundless” while insisting it never had any interest in meddling with U.S. elections.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded to Trump’s Thursday primetime address, when the president accused Beijing of infiltrating voter rolls during the 2020 contest, which he lost to former President Biden.
“The relevant allegations by the U.S. are entirely fabricated and aimed at vilifying China,” Lin said. “We have no interest in interfering in US elections and have never done so.”
He added that in contrast, the global community knows who routinely interferes with other countries’ internal affairs.
When asked if this latest accusation may cause tensions for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to the U.S. in September, Lin called on Trump to remove China from the conversation around election interference to improve relations.
“We urge the U.S. to stop making an issue of China in its elections and do something conducive to China-U.S. relations,” the spokesperson continued.
The Hill has reached out to the State Department for comment.
The president, during his speech, also said he would be declassifying and releasing “critical intelligence revealing shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure.”
Trump claimed the newly released information, which is now available on the White House website, showed China allegedly carrying out what he described as a massive compromise of election data history, resulting in the acquisition of hundreds of millions of U.S. voter files.
The claims, however, appeared to be largely unsubstantiated by the files posted to the website in a section titled “Election Integrity,” and the documents were not as conclusive as Trump had previously suggested.
