Severe weather is approaching – fire department warns of flooding and flooded basements
It will be an unpleasant Friday: Severe thunderstorms are expected across almost all of Germany. A supercell already wreaked havoc in the south of the country on Thursday.
It’s likely to get loud again in many places. And wet, very wet indeed. Strong thunderstorms and torrential rain are expected across much of Germany today; only the northwest should remain mostly dry. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast for the morning, according to meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) .
From midday onwards, widespread showers and occasionally heavy thunderstorms will move from the southwest and south across central and northeastern regions. There is a risk of severe weather locally, including torrential rain, hail, and strong winds.
The German Weather Service (DWD) is forecasting severe weather in some areas with rainfall of 25 to 40 liters per square meter in a short period. Locally, extreme weather events with amounts around 50 liters per square meter, leading to flooding and waterlogged basements, cannot be ruled out.
According to meteorologists, there is a renewed risk of large hailstones and severe gale-force winds and hurricane-force gusts of 90 to 120 kilometers per hour in the south starting this afternoon. The weather could calm down overnight into Saturday, according to the German Weather Service (DWD), with only isolated thunderstorms possible in the south.
Thunderstorm in Baden-Württemberg
Severe thunderstorms had already swept across Baden-Württemberg on Thursday. The German Weather Service described it as a so-called supercell, which moved from Echterdingen near Stuttgart to Ulm in the afternoon. A spokesperson said the supercell brought strong gusts of wind and hailstones up to five centimeters in diameter.
The Ulm fire department reported falling branches and roof tiles. In the north of the city, a tree crashed onto a moving car; the occupants were unable to escape and called emergency services. Another tree fell onto a power line. Trees and branches broke, and roof tiles also fell. No one was injured.
In the municipality of Neckartailfingen in the Esslingen district, a carport collapsed during a storm, falling onto four vehicles. Police confirmed the incident and estimated the damage at between €60,000 and €70,000.
The severe weather also caused numerous call-outs in the Rems-Murr and Ostalb districts. According to the Aalen Police Headquarters, more than 40 weather-related incidents have been recorded there so far. These included a tree falling on a car and another tree damaging a house. Additionally, roads were partially contaminated by debris washed down the road. Initial reports indicate that there have been no other major incidents or damage. However, the police are still assessing the situation.
