Projected 2027 Social Security COLA: Average and Maximum Benefit Increases
Average Social Security Benefit Could Top $2,170 in 2027 as COLA Forecast Rises. With the third quarter of 2026 underway, estimates for the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) are beginning to solidify. While the official figure will not be determined until October, preliminary projections from the nonpartisan Senior Citizens League suggest an increase of approximately 3.8%.
Although this projected adjustment is higher than the historical average over the past five decades, its real-world impact may be tempered by ongoing inflation. Here is a breakdown of what a 3.8% COLA could mean for average and maximum benefit payments next year.
Americans receiving Social Security benefits could see one of the largest cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) in recent years in 2027, according to new estimates highlighted by Yahoo Finance. If current inflation trends continue, the average monthly retirement benefit may increase by roughly $79, pushing payments above $2,170 per month.
The projected increase is based on a COLA estimate of about 3.8%, although the final adjustment will not be announced until October 2026 after the U.S. government reviews third-quarter inflation data. The adjustment is designed to help retirees keep pace with rising living costs, but the exact figure could still change depending on future inflation readings.
For retirees currently receiving the average monthly benefit of around $2,092, a 3.8% COLA would translate to an increase of about $79.50, raising the average monthly payment to approximately $2,171.50 in 2027.
Higher-income retirees could also see a notable boost. Based on current projections, the maximum monthly retirement benefit for someone claiming Social Security at full retirement age could rise by around $150 per month in 2027 if the estimated COLA is approved.
Despite the expected increase, analysts caution that a larger COLA does not necessarily mean retirees will have greater purchasing power. Rising prices for housing, healthcare, insurance, and other essential expenses could offset much of the benefit increase, leaving many seniors with only modest gains in real spending power.
The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official 2027 COLA in October after the final inflation data for the third quarter becomes available. The adjustment will take effect for benefit payments beginning in January 2027.
