NTSA Intensifies Crackdown on Pedestrians Ignoring Footbridges in Nairobi
Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has continued its enforcement campaign against pedestrians who fail to use designated footbridges and crossing points, leading to the arrest of several people in Nairobi. The operation, conducted jointly with law enforcement officers, targeted pedestrians crossing busy roads outside approved crossing areas, particularly around the Transami footbridge in the Pipeline area. The authority stated that offenders apprehended during the operation were expected to be arraigned in court. NTSA emphasized that the enforcement exercise is intended to improve compliance with traffic regulations and reduce the number of accidents involving pedestrians. In a public statement, NTSA urged pedestrians to always use designated footbridges and pedestrian crossings, noting that crossing highways or major roads at undesignated locations not only endangers individual lives but also disrupts traffic and places other road users at risk. The authority reiterated that adherence to traffic laws is essential for enhancing road safety across the country.
The latest arrests follow a series of similar enforcement operations carried out on major roads in Nairobi, including Mombasa Road and Thika Road, where authorities have previously detained pedestrians for ignoring available footbridges. Despite the presence of pedestrian infrastructure, many people continue to take shortcuts by crossing busy highways, prompting NTSA to maintain its ongoing crackdown as part of broader efforts to reduce road fatalities.
