Green Legacy Initiative Anchors Ethiopia’s Long-Term Vision for Sustainable Prosperity
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has described the Green Legacy Initiative as a cornerstone of the country’s long-term development strategy, emphasizing that environmental sustainability is inseparable from national progress and civilization.
According to the Prime Minister, lasting civilization cannot be achieved through isolated achievements in a single sector. Instead, he said Ethiopia’s development depends on a balanced approach that integrates environmental conservation, economic transformation, institutional strengthening, and social cohesion. He stressed that the Green Legacy Initiative is far more than a seasonal tree-planting campaign, portraying it as a vital component of the nation’s broader vision for sustainable prosperity.
Abiy noted that enduring development requires strong foundations, arguing that civilizations built without deep roots are unlikely to withstand future challenges. He identified ecological sustainability as one of the essential pillars supporting Ethiopia’s future, alongside investments in energy, industrialization, and human capital development.
The Prime Minister further explained that environmental protection should advance in parallel with other national priorities, including strengthening public institutions, promoting national dialogue and reconciliation, accelerating industrial and digital transformation, and improving public administration. He said these interconnected efforts are necessary to build a resilient and inclusive nation.
Warning against neglecting any aspect of national development, Abiy stated that civilization cannot be sustained without unity, economic transformation, effective state-building, and ecological responsibility. He argued that the absence of any one of these pillars would leave the country’s long-term development incomplete.
Concluding his message, the Prime Minister encouraged Ethiopians to actively participate in environmental restoration efforts, calling on citizens to “solidify our foundation by planting hope,” reinforcing the importance of the Green Legacy Initiative in shaping Ethiopia’s future.
