Dr. Dereje Engida Appointed President of Jimma University
Jimma, Ethiopia — Jimma University has appointed Dr. Dereje Engida (PhD) as its new President, marking a new chapter in the leadership of one of Ethiopia’s leading higher education and research institutions.
Dr. Dereje Engida succeeds Dr. Jemal Abafita (PhD), who served as President of Jimma University. The leadership transition has been welcomed by members of the university community, who have expressed their appreciation for Dr. Abafita’s service and congratulated Dr. Dereje on his new responsibility.
Dr. Dereje Engida brings extensive experience in higher education leadership, academic administration, research and institutional development. Before taking up his new position at Jimma University, he served as President of Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU). His academic and leadership background includes work related to science, technology, innovation and higher education development.
His appointment comes at an important time for Jimma University, which has an established role in Ethiopia’s higher education and research landscape. The university has been among the institutions identified for a stronger research-oriented role and has emphasized teaching, research, innovation, professional training and contributions to national development.
