IGAD train on protection of migrant workers’ rights – Kenya News Agency

Kenya must completely overhaul its labour migration management system to ensure that overseas labour recruitment is entirely done by the Public Service Commission and no unscrupulous private agencies.

This is a solution to the labour problems of informal labour migrants, especially in the Arab Countries.

IGAD Director of Social Justice Fatiha Alwan stated today that Labour Migration can provide an economic boost and lift members migrants out of poverty if it is done constructively.

She also pointed out that well-managed labour migration will lead to better health and education because the media will inform the governments of IGAD member countries.

“The role of media is irreversible, it has the capability of influencing relevant policies that guard Labour Migration as well as create public awareness on proper labour laws, “she noted.

ILO’s Ephraim Egnet on his part noted that Labour Migration could benefit both the giving and receiving countries if properly handled.

Egnet added that migrant workers have the right to enjoy their stay within the guest countries in proper working conditions. Migrant workers need to be aware of their rights and responsibilities as migrants.

However, he observed that Labour Migration reporting is incident-based. He noted that while this is important, priority should be given to emerging issues and challenges.

“Media practitioners are key participants in informing key and relevant policies and public opinion to improve on the livelihoods of migrant workers,” said Egnet.

In recent years, Kenya has seen reports of migrant workers going to the Arab Countries reporting physical abuse and even death. The number of these cases is increasing every day.

This has raised concerns about the need to properly report on the root causes and how they can be addressed under proper channels that will ensure their safety.

The three-day training program in Djibouti will equip journalists and media representatives with the skills necessary to pitch and make the stories about labour migration compelling and persuasive to drive policy action.
