Capitec to Rebrand as Capitec Limited Following Shareholder Approval
South Africa’s largest bank by customer base, Capitec Bank Holdings Limited, will officially change its name to Capitec Limited from 26 August 2026, following shareholder approval at the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 31 July 2026. (BusinessTech)
The company said the name change reflects its evolution beyond traditional banking into a broader financial services group. While its corporate name will change, Capitec will remain listed in the banking sector of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) under the same ticker symbol. The new name has already been registered with South Africa’s Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC). (BusinessTech)
Founded in Stellenbosch in 2001 by Michiel le Roux, Riaan Stassen, and Jannie Mouton, Capitec began as a microlender focused on serving underserved communities. Over the past two decades, the company has expanded into insurance, telecommunications, and other financial services, while growing into South Africa’s largest bank by customer numbers, serving more than 25 million clients. Capitec was listed on the JSE in 2002, initially trading at R2.75 per share. Despite a challenging start amid volatility following the collapse of Saambou Bank, the company has grown into one of the country’s largest listed firms, with a market capitalization exceeding R561 billion. (BusinessTech)
According to the company’s announced timetable, trading under the new name Capitec Limited will commence on 26 August 2026, while shareholders’ records and accounts will be updated by the end of August to reflect the rebranding. (BusinessTech)
