Lloyd Robertson, Legendary Canadian News Anchor, Dies at 92
Veteran Canadian broadcaster Lloyd Robertson, one of the country’s most respected television journalists, has died at the age of 92. His family confirmed that he passed away on Tuesday, marking the end of a broadcasting career that spanned more than six decades.
Robertson became a trusted presence in Canadian homes through his work as chief anchor and senior editor of CTV National News, a role he held from 1984 until his retirement in 2011. Before joining CTV in 1976, he spent more than 20 years at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), where he anchored the national newscast from 1970 to 1976.
Throughout his distinguished career, Robertson covered many of the defining moments of modern history, including federal elections, international conflicts, the September 11 terrorist attacks, Olympic Games, and other major global events. Known for his calm delivery and credibility, he earned the reputation of being one of Canada’s most trusted television journalists for more than a decade.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney paid tribute to Robertson, describing him as a reassuring voice who helped generations of Canadians understand the world during times of uncertainty. Robertson was also remembered for his signature closing line, “That’s the kind of day it’s been,” which became one of the most recognizable sign-offs in Canadian broadcasting.
Born in Stratford, Ontario, Robertson began his broadcasting career in radio in 1952 before joining CBC in 1954. His contributions to journalism earned him numerous honours, including appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada, induction into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and becoming the first journalist to receive a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. Even after stepping down as chief anchor, he continued working as a special correspondent for CTV.
Robertson is survived by his wife, Nancy, whom he married in 1956, and their four daughters. His legacy as one of Canada’s most influential broadcast journalists continues to inspire generations of reporters and news anchors.
