Leather Store Opened at Bole Int’l Airport to Promote Ethiopian Products
The Ministry of Industry has officially inaugurated a duty-free leather and leather products store at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.
The duty-free store was launched on Friday as part of a comparative effort to promote Ethiopian products involving the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Ethiopia Leather Industry Development Institute and Ethiopia Leather Industries Association.
The store will help to increase trade in the sector and avail quality products to the world market to gain international recognition, according to the Ethiopian Airlines.
During the trial period in the last few months, the shops have managed to generate over $200 million.
The expectation now is to earn up to $400 million a year just by selling various products to the customers that the Airlines transports.
The Airlines transported 6.9 million international travelers during the recently concluded 2021/22FY.
The duty free store at the hub of the Ethiopian Airlines has embraced eight model leather enterprises.
“We have to make other industries take lessons from this to produce export quality products and sell here,” Industry Minister Melaku Alebel said at the inaguration event.
JICA’s critical support focuses on increasing productivity of industries and promotion of export, Melaku added.
About 200 meters square area has been allocated at Bole International Airport terminal for the duty free shop.
