Safaricom Ethiopia revealed a plan to invest 1.5 billion USD in building 5,000 new towers over three years to extend network infrastructure throughout the country

According to a statement sent to local media, Safaricom Ethiopia announced that the investment is part of its commitment to provide high quality, reliable telecommunication services to customers across the country. The operator manages 2,500 towers around the nation; including 1500 self-built and the rest leased from Ethio Telecom.

“We are excited to expand our network and improve connectivity for millions of Ethiopians,” said Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia. “This investment underscores our dedication to bridging the digital divide and driving economic growth in Ethiopia.”

“The ECA rapidly built its capacity to address the regulatory demands of the fast-changing telecommunications landscape in Ethiopia. The Authority’s recent Determination No. 2 of 2024 set the Mobile Termination Rate (MTR) at 0.23 down from 0.31, enabling customers of both licensees an opportunity to call at more favorable rates, is a testament to its resolve to ensure market efficiencies and customer rights. We look forward to continued collaboration with the Authority as we work to enhance our network and services.”

It stated that Safaricom Ethiopia’s network expansion will enhance coverage and capacity, providing access to advanced mobile and digital finance services, and connectivity for individuals and businesses.
